Eric, Jensen, Jared... words of appreciation
February 1, 2007
Realizing that MR. KRIPKE (or assistants) may take the time to occasionally check our comments, I’m going to take this opportunity to rant and rave a bit. As a 30-something medical professional, I may not fit the mold of the typical viewer, but I would like to THANK Mr. Kripke and every person involved in Supernatural from the bottom of my heart for providing us with such a superb show and renewing my faith that quality television really does exist. I am in awe of the creative talents at work here which have consistently brought us phenomenal episodes -- every single one of them to date -- no bell curve here… each one has been in the 90th percentile and above. My line of work demands excellence and I can definitely respect the efforts required to produce such outstanding work on a weekly basis under the tremendous time pressures. My sincere hope is that the studio realizes it as well and does not allow the deadly Thurs at 9 spot to kill the show.
WHY AM I ENTHRALLED WITH THIS PROGRAM? Well, I see enough real drama every day and I don’t want my TV to be just another reflection of that… can’t deal with superfluous Grey’s Anatomy, have had enough of the cop and reality shows, and am totally fed up with the long drawn out mysteries of Lost (my limit for such mysteries is about a half-season; if it drags on more than that, it is just plain annoying and not worth my valuable time). The only other program that captivates me in this regard and gets my full attention is “24”.
ON SUPERNATURAL, WE GET THE PERFECT MIX : the scary thrills, weekly hunt, the emotionality between the brothers, and enough mysteries to keep us guessing in the short-term makes for one potent combination. The heart of the show MUST remain the ongoing development of the relationship between the brothers, with the surface hostility and priceless smartass remarks covering the true “I would die for you” bond they share. Don’t be afraid to capitalize on those rare chick-flick type moments! My greatest disappointment came with the announcement of a potential long-term “love interest”, which was only topped by the inappropriate, teeny-bopper choice of actress playing Jo. So wrong for this show, for so many reasons. I’m not saying the boys shouldn’t have a little fun now and then, but if I want to see love angst, I’ll visit the O.C. or Smallville. As an old adage goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Past characters Bobby & Missouri should not be forgotten. New characters Ash & Ellen will make interesting additions.
NOW A WORD ABOUT THE ACTORS. Excellent writing is practically worthless without talented actors to bring the words to life. To Jensen and Jared, congratulations for consistently upping their game with these characters. Jensen’s work on Dean, from the perfectly timed line delivery to the facial expressions is impeccable. The work of both only gets better and better as the weeks go by. The chemistry is phenomenal. My heartfelt thanks to both for the long hours and hard work they dedicate, and for sharing their talents with us. Sure, they are getting well paid and riding the fame wave, but work is still work! I will also truly miss the wonderful performances of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but I understand the necessity of what happened to drive this show even further creatively and emotionally. (But I am almost positive we haven’t seen the last of Daddy Winchester… after all, this IS Supernatural!)
Enough raving for now! I loved season 1 and am so looking forward to the ride for the rest of season 2. Mr. Kripke, Jensen, Jared and everyone involved… thank you all so very, very much!!!

You have to watch!
November 29, 2006
I can say that from the very first time I saw this show I was hooked for life. Not only does this show have enough horror, angst, and drama; but there's also the added little bits of comedy with the banter between the brothers Winchester and their little prank wars.
It sure as hell doesn't hurt that the actors playing Sam (Jared Padaecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are not only talented actors, but some sweet "eye candy" as well. They also do pretty good when looking for guest stars as well: for example when they had Linda Blair (from 'The Exorcist' fame) guest star as a cop a couple weeks ago in the episode "The Usual Suspects".
If you're a fan of the supernatural genre and want to watch as two everyday joe's fight against evil and saving people, then this is the show for you. Kripke (the creator and producer) has definitely found a winning combination with this show, just as he had with "The X-Files" all those years ago.

Supernatural, the reason I watch TV
January 30, 2008
I have not seen Lost. I have not seen Gray's Anatomy. Why? Because they are on opposite my absolutely favorite show, Supernatural.
This is a show that is amazingly well written. It maintains consistency through the seasons and episodes (did he mention that in Season 1? Well, it still applies in Season 3). The characters (through the phenomenal acting of Padalecki and Ackles) actually respond as if they've lived through all the horrors we've seen in the past seasons (and the stuff we haven't seen). Everything about the writing strikes one as exactly as it should be.
The plots are well constructed and the episodes neatly balance the "monster of the week"/horror with the "mythology" of the show. One would assume that mythology to be in tune with the horror, but it's sweeter, more dramatic, and more touching than any of the Weeper of the Week sort of TV movies (but OOOOOH so better acted and written). The Brothers Winchester have been dragged through hell on earth (and perhaps soon in hell) and they show the scars -- emotionally, mentally, and (presumably) physically (one doesn't want to mess up those pretty faces and bodies for the TV audience, at least not for very long).
This is a show that has 2 main characters and then a handful of secondary characters (not including the car) that appear irregularly. Yes, instead of the 20+ characters on those medical or cop shows, we follow 2 characters. Boy, do we get to know those characters very well. And yet, there are always mysteries to leave us guessing.
So there are "per episode" mysteries, "per season" mysteries and then the general mysteries of each of these very rich personalities. And we are not left to linger in doubt forever so that we become irritated (see: Lost). The mystery is presented, dangled, taunting us, and then just when you think it's going to drive you crazy, answers are given. It's satisfying.
So, my review of Supernatural -- one of the best shows on TV that you didn't know existed -- is that it is amazingly well written, well plotted, well researched, and well acted. It's only fault is that it's poorly advertised (oh, yeah, and in a killer time slot) and people dismiss it because they think it's just "horror" (or scifi?).
Catch it on Thursday nights.
Buy the DVDs of the first two seasons.
You will be satisfied.

Great Story, Great Characters
December 13, 2006
I don't really like sci-fi type shows but this is a little on the edges of it because its not totally out there unreal type things but you can actually think of these things probably happening. And of course it doesn't hurt that the lead characters are fine.
